About Brum's Animal Sanctuary

A story of love and resilience

It all began with a beagle named Brum, who came into my life in 2008. Our relationship taught me to love and respect all living beings, which created in me a huge sense of reponsability towards the other-than-human world. Due to our strong bond and how it altered my perception of things, I started helping dogs in need. In the course of 11 years, from 2009 through 2020, I rescued and aided over 100 dogs. Nine of those doggies were freed from a Brazilian University research facility after I put up a 2-year fight against the institution.

By 2020, I had 11 dogs of my own and thought we could use some more space. So I decided to buy a piece of land and live closer to nature.

It was not long before I came face to face with the challenges of Brazil’s rural areas. Upon witnessing the suffering of bulls and cows tied to poles without water or shelter from the scalding Brazilian sun, seeing dogs die of dehydration on the sidewalks, and calves being kicked at on the streets, I decided to broaden the scope of my initial project.

The bulls Benjamin and Walter were the Sanctuary's first new residentsTheir beautiful presences completely changed the dynamics of the place, which soon became a Sanctuary for the elderly and those exploited by the meat, dairy and pharmaceutical industries. The dogs Alfred, Sarah, and George followed them along with the geese Laura and Lucas, turning the land into a shelter for individuals with different needs and ways of living.

As time went by, a reforestation project, which has always been one of my goals, started attracting birds and insects, who now come and go as they seem to enjoy the Sanctuary more and more each day.

The project now involves more people and has welcomed volunteers who do a great job on a daily basis.

Brum was my first inspiration, as he taught me to love unconditionally. He passed on September 14th 2021, living me with a broken heart, but also with the certainty that I am on the right path. Now I invite you to join us and be a part of this story of love, resistance and change.
